We were successful in our response to a recent tender, to manage the design and installation of wayfinding signage and digital information totems to improve navigation and accessibility within the historic Halifax Borough Market.
The award-winning market was first opened in 1896 and has been the beating heart of the town ever since. It’s a beautiful site, with Victorian architecture and detailing throughout, including an ornate Victorian era clock-tower, beautiful glass roof and intricate architectural carvings.
Calderdale Council awarded Morgans Consult the contract following a competitive tender process.

About Halifax Borough Market
- Its Grade II listed by English Heritage
- Awarded the title of Best Market by the National Association of British Market Authorities in 2008
- Built on the site of a much older market, dating back to 1790
- A centenary celebration was held in 1996, coinciding with the Great British Market Week between 19 and 26 May.
- In 1993 the iconic central clock was refurbish, using more than fifty square feet of gold leaf.
Requirements
The works comprise the design, manufacture and installation of free-standing digital totems, wall-mounted displays and wayfinding signage throughout the site, to improve navigation and accessibility.
There’s a heavy emphasis on foundation planning, fixing solutions, power supply routing and placement to protect the integrity of the Grade II listed status of the structure. Our work with multiple heritage institutions responsible for the management of listed sites allowed us to evidence tried and tested solutions.

We’ve also been working increasingly in the digital signage space, supplying digital totems to clients across the UK including universities, healthcare institutions, and shopping malls.
