• Established in 1883 and became a founding college of the University of Wales in 1893
• A member of the prestigious Russell Group, a group of leading UK research-intensive universities.
• Recently invested £600 million in campus upgrades
• The project required high-level branding, positioned at up to 50m
• Internal signage audits and wayfinding strategies
• Resulted in the design of a sign implementation guide for the estate

Requirement

Cardiff University had two main objectives. Firstly, it wanted to increase brand awareness across the city using large, high-level external branding that evidenced its status as Wales’s leading academic institution. It also wanted to ensure students and visitors had a positive experience through strategic wayfinding and branding systems.

Result

Morgans Consult were commissioned to manage the signage, wayfinding and branding requirements across the city-wide network of campuses and buildings. Initially, we worked with Cardiff University to brand multiple campus buildings using illuminated letters and logos. The signage included built up illuminated letters with day/night acrylic faces and illuminated flex faces installed at a variety of heights; the highest a large flex face sign installed on the tower building at 50m.

This required significant project management and complex logistics planning, working alongside Cardiff Council Highways to close roads and manage vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

We also delivered full signage audits, wayfinding strategy and bespoke system design across multiple Cardiff University locations including JOMEC (School of Journalism), the Cubric building, and Glamorgan building.

Wayfinding systems at universities are particularly important to assist visitors and students new to the city in cross-city navigation from one campus to another, and to manage the flow of people once on site.

The Glamorgan scheme also included the design and production of 3D maps to further aid navigation, and a wayfinding scheme that simplified routes through the complex space.

This project further led to the client commissioning Morgans Consult to design the Cardiff University internal signage guidelines that is now used to assist the scheme implementation across the whole estate.
