Calderdale Council/Halifax Borough Market

Halifax Borough Market is one of the North of England’s most distinctive covered markets – a Grade II* listed building that has stood at the heart of Halifax since 1896.
Despite its historic prominence, the market faced a genuine footfall challenge: many visitors passed the building without recognising the commercial activity inside.

Following a comprehensive refurbishment by Calderdale Council – including roof repairs, a new events space and restoration of the central clock area – we were appointed to design, manufacture and install a wayfinding scheme that would support that investment and bring people confidently through the doors.

Our scope covered both static signage and digital totem installations, including all foundation preparation, ducting and conduit work across internal and external areas. All work was carried out in compliance with a Joint Contracts Tribunal (JCT) contract.

Brief

We designed and installed a comprehensive static and digital wayfinding scheme for Halifax Borough Market, helping Calderdale Council bring visitors confidently into the space and providing the flexibility to respond to changing trader occupancy, events and promotions without physical modifications to the scheme

Solution

The market presented a challenge that static signage alone could not address. Trader occupancy changes regularly – units change hands, traders relocate, and seasonal layout adjustments are routine. A purely static scheme would require physical modifications every time any of this occurred. The digital totems resolve this directly.

The fully branded totems are managed by Calderdale Council and updated in real time without any physical intervention. The screens display trader directories and unit locations, event information and programming, marketing and promotional content, seasonal layout changes, and live announcements – giving the Council a flexible, responsive communication platform across the site.

The digital installation also creates a commercial opportunity for the Council. The screens provide a platform for on-site advertising, offering a potential revenue stream from trader promotions and third-party advertising as footfall grows
